Mistakes, part of the learning process
As part of the learning process students will make lots of mistakes,
as they deal with diverse topics and structures to work with. Personally, I
believe that is it important to choose material that is challenging but convenient
for a particular group of students. In addition to this, I think that correcting
mistakes in positive ways it is a valuable help inasmuch as there may be
students who are sensitive in those certain situations.
Teachers can consider many variables at the moment of correcting mistakes:
Teachers can consider many variables at the moment of correcting mistakes:
Introducing new vocabulary, focusing on the correct pronunciation of central words and practice them using choral repetition. This means students are not immediately singled out to pronounce new and unfamiliar words and they can become accustomed to different sounds.
Self- Correction, it is the best way for students to correct themselves. If a student answers a question incorrectly teachers can gently prompt them to revisit their answer. Teachers should think about a useful way, tactic or method to make them pay attention to what they have done. At this point the student has an opportunity to think about and revise his initial response. Having an own method of prompting students with a facial expression or phrase it will help them considerably because they will associate that with being incorrect as it is better than saying words such as wrong or incorrect. They are negative and they will probably have ill effects on students’ confidence in the classroom.
Peer Correction, it is an excellent technique whereby learners correct each other, rather than the teacher doing this. It is a useful method as learners can feel less intimidated being helped by others in the classroom. Nevertheless, some learners are highly resistant to being corrected by someone else, preferring the teacher instead.
You're right. There are a lot of ways of helping students become aware and independent when it comes to noticing that something might be wrong. I think it relates to the well-known proverb "give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime"
